Hammy

Sioux Falls Area Humane Society - Sioux Falls, SD

Hammy's story began on December 6, 2024, when he arrived at the shelter, emaciated and alone. There was no paperwork attached to him, leaving us to wonder whether he was truly a stray or, perhaps, abandoned at the shelter. Though we will never know for sure, what we did know was that Hammy’s condition was heartbreaking. His small frame was painfully thin, with his ribs, spine, and hipbones painfully visible beneath a dull, patchy coat.

Our first priority was to stabilize him. We put him on a careful re-feeding schedule, introducing food gradually to help him regain his strength without overwhelming his frail body. Over the next few weeks, Hammy’s physical health started to improve. However, just when we thought things might be getting better, another challenge arose. Hammy developed a severe case of kennel cough. While most dogs recover in about two weeks, Hammy struggled with it for a full six weeks, further exhausting him both physically and mentally.

As his body healed, his spirit began to show signs of wear. Life in the shelter, without the comfort of a foster home, began to take its toll. The long days in the kennel, coupled with the stress of illness, left Hammy increasingly anxious and reactive. Despite his sweet, affectionate nature, his behavior began to scare potential adopters who came to meet him. It became clear that he could not stay at the shelter much longer—his time was running out.

In a last-ditch effort, we managed to secure a short-term foster home for Hammy, offering him the quiet, healing environment he desperately needed. At the same time, we reached out to over 40 rescues, hoping for a chance at a better life for Hammy. Only three rescues responded, and while two of them declined, one—R.E.A.L—immediately took action. They began sharing his story on their social media pages, trying to connect him with someone who could see past his scars and give him a chance.

Days passed, and then, a family saw his post. They were eager and excited, but when they met Hammy, the connection just was not there. He was not quite ready. Heartbroken, we went back to square one. However, we were not ready to give up on him. The foster family, seeing Hammy’s potential, agreed to extend their stay for another week, allowing him more time to heal and show his true self.

With a renewed sense of urgency, R.E.A.L. posted another update, and this time, a family from a small town three hours away saw it. They were captivated by Hammy’s story and reached out. After several conversations, we arranged another meeting, and this time, Hammy’s heart opened up. Within minutes of meeting his potential new family, it was clear that Hammy had found his place. He was gentle, playful, and completely at ease, as though he had known them forever. His true personality, hidden for so long behind the pain and stress of shelter life, finally shone through.

Thanks to the unwavering support of R.E.A.L., who continued to champion Hammy’s journey despite not being able to officially take him into their rescue, Hammy’s life was forever changed. His perfect family had been waiting for him, and they found each other.

On March 14, 2025, Hammy’s adoption was finalized, and his new life officially began. He was no longer the sick, frightened dog who arrived at the shelter months ago. Instead, he was a beloved family member, finally living the life filled with the love, stability, and care he deserved. Hammy’s story—from heartbreak to hope—is a testament to the power of compassion, resilience, teamwork, and the incredible people who never gave up on him.
